Competition for all teachers:Mindspark with Fractions

Educational Initiatives (EI) is pleased to announce that it is opening the doors of Mindspark to all the Maths teachers across India. EI believes that in this collaborative wiki era, ideas can come from anywhere and from anyone;hence we are now inviting ideas to help us teach fractions effectively to kids.

Fractions and decimal fractions have befuddled kids since time immemorial. Much of the confusion in learning these concepts appears to arise from the many different interpretations (constructs),representations (models) and notations (5/4,1 1/4,1.25,125 percent). But,these concepts can’t be neglected. They form an important part of the middle years’ Mathematics curriculum. Fractions both underpin the development of proportional reasoning and are important for future mathematics study, including that of algebra and probability.

To create an amazing learning program for fractions and decimal fractions send us ideas in any form:games,hands-on activities, worksheets on fractions in real life situations, best practices in the classroom etc. The ideas which get used will be duly awarded. When we convert any idea into an activity,a game,an interactive,or the way Mindspark teaches a concept, the idea owner’s name will appear alongside. We shall also share the idea in ASSETScope if shortlisted.

So,what are you waiting for, open your mail-boxes,draft a mail consisting of a great idea and send it across to mindsparkfractions@gmail.com in a Microsoft word file.

The last date to send your entries is 31st March,  2012.

This is your shot at helping every kid learn with understanding;your help will go a long way in removing the fear of fractions and decimals from every kid’s mind.

EI to host National School Leadership Programme in Kolkata

Educational Initiatives (EI) recently released the findings of their Quality Education Study (QES) that they conducted across the top schools of the five metro cities – Delhi,Mumbai,Chennai,Bangalore and Kolkata, with Wipro.

QES found out about the learning levels among students in these top schools. The study also looks are the co-scholastic and behavioural changes of the students. The study has an administrative angle too where reponses of principals and teachers were also taken into account to find out about administrative decisions, student disciplining and leadership issues.

The study was a first step towards addressing some of the concerns:

  • What is meant by quality education?
  • Do children in our schools learn with understanding, are they developing holistically and also acquiring values like sensitivity and concern for others?
  • What would one find in quality learning environments in terms of school leadership, teaching learning practices, classroom climate, etc?

The findings of the study have some very interesting as well as disturbing revelations. This very reason, the report has been covered in the some of the leading dailies and magazines of the country like Mint (http://www.ei-india.com/wp-content/uploads/QES_Coverage_in_LiveMint-in.pdf),The Hindu (http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/op-ed/article2707183.ece),Deccan Chronical,DNA,Outlook (http://www.outlookindia.com/article.aspx?279778) and Education World.

The findings of the QES provide great learning for the academic institutions, their heads, teachers and all other educators. EI has decided to share its learnings from the study with educators, parents and other interested individuals through a seminar series.

The first seminar of the series ‘National School Leadership Seminar’ will be conducted in Kolkata on February 24 at Middleton Chambers &Middleton Inn, 10 Middleton Street, Kolkata. The seminar,in brief, would discuss the current education system, the findings of QES,provide opportunity for exchange of ideas among school leaders though interaction and explore the notions of quality education as perceived by different experts and researchers in education. The hardcopies of the Quality Education Study report would be distributed during the seminar.

‘What’s wrong with our education cannot be fixed with technology’–Steve Job

“I used to think that technology could help education. I’ve probably spearheaded giving away more computer equipment to schools than anybody else on the planet. But I’ve had to come to the inevitable conclusion that the problem is not one that technology can hope to solve. What’s wrong with education cannot be fixed with technology. No amount of technology will make a dent.”–Steve Job.

Here is a thought by the visionary Steve Job. We agree with what he has to say, that technology is not a solution,it can only be the means. We are glad that Educational Initiatives believes the same and thus keeps students and their learning needs at the core of all that it does. Technology only supports the process of making the process of learning / assessment quick and fun for the students.
